Приветствую!

Chauchat

Dargot.

It's true that a rimmed cartridge used by a weapon firing in bursts, it's not really ideal.

Using a curved magazine in addition, it only reinforces the shooting incidents.

But the idea was a good one.

With the same parameters, the English, a few years later, managed to develop a not too bad LMG, the BREN ...

Nevertheless, let's beware of "bad reputations", sometimes undeserved.

The director of my old Shooting Club owned one (as well as an MG 08/15), used all 2 as part of a test shoot for French television (series "The Great Battles").

As he was a neighbor and friend, and that I accompanied him on his outings with military vehicles from his collection, I had the happiness of emptying a complete magazine. No problem noted.

But in the muddy trenches of Verdun or the Argonne, it might not have been the same song ...

Speaking of reputation, the fabulous and highly esteemed Mauser 96, a true "Swiss watch" for the quality of its machining, was perfect, especially in an environment free of mud.

And to finish on the association of an excellent reputation and always this mud, the "great" P-08 did not present too much of a problem when it remained in its comfortable and very hermetical regulatory holster, its "knees" being very "ticklish" and sensitive to the environment.

But, in this situation, it still happened to lose its magazine, an incorrectly placed outgrowth pressing the very sensitive eject button. As part of an assault, this constitutes a very unpleasant surprise when you want to take it out of the "well-made" hard leather holster to use it ...

So, reputations, you have to take some and leave some, especially when we are talking about a combat weapon (and not a weapon for shooting at the range) !

Cheers

Bonjour!

>It's true that a rimmed cartridge used by a weapon firing in bursts, it's not really ideal.
We've been using a rimmed cartridge since 1891 and have experienced every conceivable problem with it :) Although the Lebel cartridge seems to be even more conical.

>a few years later, managed to develop a not too bad LMG, the BREN
I personally consider BREN as the best LMG of WW2. Light, durable, not very complicated.

Thanks for sharing personal experience with oldtimer weapon! Yes, dust or mud can quickly jam any weapon. Even the AK and PKM - champions in resistance to dirt - must be protected from it and cleaned regularly. And not so durable systems, especially WW1, when weapon automatic schemes weren't as developed as now...

Cordially, Dargot.
