Несколько странный вопрос про пулемет Шоша

Этот пулемет заслуженно пользуется плохой репутацией, но, так посмотреть, были у него и достоинства - легкий, дешевый, простой в производстве.

Вопрос: можно ли было сделать из него что-то приемлемое?
1) Использовать нормальный (а не лебелевский) патрон. Так сделали американцы (.30-06) и, кажется, бельгийцы. Причем можно взять патрон поменьше и облегчить пулемет.
2) (Вытекает из п.1) сделать нормальный магазин патронов на 20 - см. на картинку, так сделали американцы. Как вариант - попытаться заимствовать сему питания у Мадсена (только магазин уменьшить. великоват).
3) Переделать приклад, чтобы он был на продолжении оси ствола и ствольной коробки.
4) Сошки сделать получше, а не вот это.

Или бесполезно, доктор сказал в морг - значит в морг?

I have translated the various comments above, and I generally respond to interesting remarks.

Indeed the CHAUCHAT was a kind of "assault rifle" before the time, intended for assault troops (and "trench cleaners"). A weapon near of the Browning 1918. BAR = Browning Automatic Rifle, not a LMG (even if the standard US infantry combat squad considered it that way. But after 20 rounds, such fire support must temporarily cease).

We must nevertheless talk about a particularity, which would tend to classify it as the precursor of the squad LMG: it's not an individual weapon, because an ammo supplier accompanies the shooter.

And a weapon with an interesting tactical feature: the possibility of shooting while walking (impossible with machine guns).

The bipod was intended for one of the 2 firing modes of an automatic weapon (meaning "machine gun", at that time) in the prone position, for the burst shooting : the "mowing".

I've always wondered - how was the Chauchat machine gun meant to be reloaded when firing from the hip? It doesn't look very convenient.
